Established in 1998, the Arthur Russell Strings Program (ARS) offers intermediate and advanced level music students the opportunity to acquire rigorous training and experience performing as part of a chamber music ensemble. During the week-long program, students in grades 6-12 benefit from a supportive atmosphere while preparing for a free public performance which showcases the accomplishments of individual chamber ensembles and the ARS orchestra.
Students are selected for the program on the basis of demonstrated playing ability coupled with their enthusiasm, interest, and musical experience. After serving more than 135 students from the Maine communities of Mount Desert Island, Hancock County, and beyond, ARS is currently working to increase interest in and awareness of ensemble opportunities for young people in Maine. Three unique experiences for our students are a resident quartet of college-age musicians who serve as mentors for younger students, an opportunity to apply for the ARS Honors Quartet which receives special coaching and performance opportunities, and program visits by guest artists. The July 2012 program promises to be our most exciting year yet!
The Pierre Monteux Memorial Foundation, Inc, sponsor of the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestra Musicians, will continue to serve as our fiscal sponsor in 2012. The Arthur Russell Strings program fully embraces Pierre Monteux's dream to create fine musicians. We appreciate this collaboration with Monteux School and are deeply grateful to them for their support.
